Art and Design

Our vision of include, inspire and achieve enables pupils to be motivated life-long learners who develop creativity and a passion for art. They are enthusiastic learners who enjoy being creative and are inspired by the knowledge they have learnt about a range of art and crafts.

Intent

At Starbeck Primary Academy, our Art curriculum is designed to be accessible to all children where every child is given an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas as well as develop knowledge and skills.

At Starbeck Primary Academy we want our children to love art, craft and design! We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and to grow up wanting to be illustrators, graphic designers, fashion designers, curators, architects or printmakers. Our Art curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, whilst equipping them with the knowledge and skills to be able to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Our teachers have a real passion for art and inspire children through engaging lessons that are linked to all areas of the curriculum. We believe creativity and engaging in art is a powerful way of exploring and reinforcing British Values, cultures and significant events.

Implementation

To ensure high standards of teaching and learning in art and design, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Art and design is taught as part of each half termly topic, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. Teachers plan lessons for their class using our progression of skills document. The progression document ensures the curriculum is covered and the skills/knowledge taught is progressive through each Key stage. This also ensures coverage of all aspects of art including 3D art, textiles and digital media. Throughout each Key stage pupils are taught about the work of artists, architects and designers and use inspiration from this work to create their own pieces. Our progression document also includes a range of enriching outdoor learning opportunities where pupils can be creative with nature and be inspired by educational visits to local area landscapes and resources. Key language for each Key stage is clear and taught using our Art Key Language document. The language is explicit for each area of Art and is built upon throughout each pupil’s journey through Primary School.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) follows the ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ guidance which aims for all children in reception to be taught Expressive arts and design where pupil’s will develop imagination, creativity and their ability to use media and materials.by the end of the academic year.
