British Values
At Starbeck Primary Acdemy we learn about British values.
Democracy: how citizens can influence decision making through the democratic process
- School council elections and meetings to give all pupils a voice
- Class decisions on reward systems such as golden time
- Head boy and head girl nominations, canvassing and voting
- Competition throughout the school to design the new school logo
- Discussing up-to-date issues linked to Newsround and reading current news topics
- All pupils having a voice, asking questions freely
- Learning about the national democratic process through study of the Houses of Parliament
- Pupils involved in their own learning and are proud of this
Individual liberty: an understanding that the freedom to choose and hold other faiths and beliefs is protected by law
- Pupils make their own choices with regards to learning
- Sanctuary weeks focusing on Christian values, giving children time to reflect on world issues
- Promoting the pupils' different cultures through discussion, events and themed days
- Celebrating Chinese New Year
- PSHE and RE curriculum taught throughout school
- Tolerance of different family arrangements and awarenss of sexual orientation
- The choice of school clubs to attend in and after school
- Assemblies to promote different beliefs and choices that can be made
Mutual respect and tolerance: people with different faiths and beliefs (or none) should be accepted and tolerated and should not cause prejudice or discrimination
- Pupils involved in show and tell developing respect for others beliefs and values
- Discrimination and stereotypes are challenged
- Through play pupils develop a sense of tolerance and acceptance for example same sex marriage
- Different faiths are celebrated and explored
- Through RE, stories are shared in different faiths and the similarities and differences discussed
- Assemblies share stories from different faiths and cultures to provide discussion
- Pupils support charity events to benefit a range of people fomr different backgrounds, cultures and places in the world
- Positive attitudes around difference are promoted for example disability, sexual orientation, beliefs, culture and faith
The rule of law: an appreciation that living under the rule of law protects indivudal citizens and is essential for their wellbegin and safety
- The school rules that are displayed in all classes and open areas are related to at all times
- Online safety teaching, sharing the rules of online sites and protecting pupils from internet risks
- Links with the local police force, visits and talks in school
- The school behaviour policy, promoting positive attitudes and providing clear consequences for the wrong choices
- Pupils role play situations to explore the right and wrong choices
- Learning about systems within our society that protect us
- Debates in current issues for example the Syrian crisis and the EU referendum
- School routines that are adhered to daily.
