Science

At Starbeck Primary Academy, we recognise the importance of Science in everyday life and want to make it accessible to all children. We aim to develop children’s enjoyment and interest in Science by offering them a curriculum which ignites their interest and enables them to explore and discover the world around them.

 

Intent

 

To achieve this, we offer all children exciting, practical hands-on experiences that encourage curiosity and most importantly the ability to question. We believe that these opportunities will ensure that our children are confident, life-long learners who have respect for their environment and a desire to explore the world around them. Our Science lessons offer a broad range of experiences designed to engage and challenge our children, inspiring them to strive to become the scientists of the future. We create a positive attitude to science learning, have the expectation that all children can achieve high standards and, where possible, take science out of the classroom into the natural world. To ensure high standards we have designed a curriculum that is progressive throughout school, building on previous year’s knowledge and skills. In Early years, science is taught when children are learning about the world around them in their play and focused group work.

 

Implementation

 

Throughout Key Stage 1 and 2, children have weekly Science lessons following the National curriculum topics for each year group using various programmes of study and STEM resources. Learning is matched to ability and aptitude for all the leaners and constantly reviewed to ensure interest, engagement, and that is current content in line with up to date topics ensuring high expectations of progress and attainment. At Starbeck Primary Academy, together with the National Curriculum, our Science teaching gives opportunities for our children to:

  • Learn to ask and answer questions about our world in a safe manner using Explorify
  • Become independent thinkers by planning and carrying out their own investigations around a topic
  • Know and discuss the different types of Science enquiry through Science displays in each classroom
  • Enhance their learning in Science by using the school grounds and local area when appropriate
  • Develop connections with the local community 
  • Use a range of equipment during investigations from magnifying glasses in EYFS to Data Loggers in KS2
  • Have their progress tracked using STAT on line

 

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) follows the ‘Development Matters in the EYFS’ guidance which aims for all children in reception to have an ‘Understanding of the World; Past and Present, People, Culture and Communities and the Natural World’ by the end of the academic year.
