Geography

Our goal at Starbeck Primary Academy is for the Geography curriculum to help children to develop a sense of awe and wonder about the world; to enable children to understand the world’s peoples, environments and the processes that create and affect every aspect of our lives. It will provide children with the necessary cultural curiosity to become global citizens, with an awareness of current world events. Our geography curriculum will allow children to take on the role of a geographer: exploring, discovering and beginning to make sense of the world around them.

Intent

At Starbeck Primary Academy we want children to develop a sense of curiosity and fascination, to encourage them to think for themselves, to take the initiative, to ask questions and to investigate our world. We want pupils to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes. Children will have an understanding of the processes that affect changes to human and physical features within the landscape. Children will have the opportunity to use a range of different sources of information such as: maps, diagrams, globes, interactive resources and photographs to understand how the landscape has changed over time and the processes that have affected these changes. Our children will be confident, enthusiastic geographers that can clearly discuss their learning. Out-ofclass opportunities ensure geography will provide children with opportunities to take responsibility for looking after their own environments.

Implementation

The Geography programme of study provided by the National Curriculum has been broken down to ensure both progression and consistency of coverage across Key Stage 1 and 2. At Starbeck Primary Academy, our geography teaching, learning and sequencing of the curriculum follows:

• A geography progression of skills that is organised into four main themes: Geographic and skills fieldwork; locational knowledge; human and physical; and place knowledge for each year group

• Each theme will be taught explicitly through exciting topics, including links to other areas of the curriculum, particularly Science and History

• Consistency of coverage will be ensured through planning lessons using our progression of skills document and the knowledge mats (these offer a summary outline of the key learning for each year group, including essential vocabulary). The progression document ensures the curriculum is covered and the skills/knowledge taught is progressive through each Key stage

• Fieldwork allowing pupils to explore their local area
